Climate and Seasons

Wet and dry seasons in Kenya offer unique travel opportunities

With pleasant year round temperatures, it is always a great time to visit Kenya. In the savannah, Kenya has two distinct types of seasons: wet season and dry season. Each season offers travelers unique opportunities to view Kenyan landscapes and wildlife.

The rainiest time of the year, the long rains, run from April to May, while the short rains occur in November and early December. In the wet seasons, the vegetation in the savannah grows lush and green. Visitors are also more likely to see baby animals during the wet season. Even though rain occurs more frequently during the wet seasons, the sun typically makes an appearance for the majority of each day. The wet season provides a dramatic backdrop for photography due to the sharp contrast between moody skies and verdant vegetation.

The dry season in Kenya extends from mid-December through March, and then again from June to October. During these months, the savannah receives little to no rain. The vegetation turns from a vivid green color to the classic muted yellows that the African savannah is known for. With sparse vegetation, wildlife is easy to spot during the dry seasons. A particularly unique phenomenon, the great migration of wildebeest, occurs in the Maasai Mara during August and September.
